Platform, Poster, and Computer-Based Training Presentations
and
Professional Development Seminars

The CSHEMA2000 Technical Program Committee invites both CSHEMA members and non-members to submit abstracts for platform, poster, computer-based training presentations and proposals for "Professional Development Seminars (PDSs)" pertaining to campus health, safety or environmental management. Each platform presentation will be given 25 MINUTES, including questions; thus, the scope should be adjusted accordingly.

Please read the following sections carefully before submitting your abstract information for platform, poster, and computer-based training presentations.

Abstract Requirements & Criteria

  1. Your abstract must be NO MORE than 400 words.
  2. Abstracts that suggest commercialism, either through writing style or trade names, will be rejected.
  3. Abstracts should not contain tables, figures, or bibliographic references.
  4. Substance of the abstract must not have been presented or published previously.
  5. Promissory statements, such as "will be discussed, will be presented, will be studied, or will be analyzed," cannot be accepted.
  6. Decision to accept or reject an abstract will be based on the following criteria:
    1. Purpose and reasons for work: Is the purpose clearly stated, creative, or original? Is the title descriptive of the abstract?
    2. Does it cover the key facts, conclusions, and other important information?
    3. Does the abstract exclude general, obvious, deadwood information? It should omit definitions and other background information if they are not the major focus of the report – the abstract should not be an introduction.
    4. Is the phrasing compact and concise?
    5. Is it applicable to campus safety, health, and environmental management?
    6. Does it provide useful conclusions and substantiated recommendations?
    7. Audience appeal: Will other CSHEMA members find the subject interesting?

Several focus areas for presentations have been determined. Indicate which track best fits your presentation in the your abstract submittal or submit as Miscellaneous if it does not fit any of the below focus areas.

Presentation Format

Choose one of the following formats: platform, poster, platform/poster presentation, or computer-based training. Indicate your choice in your submittal.

Platform: Platform (oral) presentations are limited to 25 minutes, including questions and may be augmented by the use of overhead, slide, and/or computer projectors (computers must be furnished by presenters unless special arrangements are made).

Poster: A visual display (approximately 6 ft x 4 ft) on fiberboard. Poster sessions will include a 2-hour block time period during which the presenter is in attendance to answer questions and an additional time period when the poster is unattended but available for viewing.

Interactive Computer-Based Training: New this year - Demonstrations of interactive computer-based training will be accommodated. Training presenters will be given a location to set up their own laptop computers for demonstration. Please note that Internet connections will not be available, so the appropriate programs, files, and web pages must be loaded on the individual laptops.

Submission of Abstracts

Please submit abstracts via the on-line form. The deadline for submitting abstracts is January 13, 2000. Notification of acceptance will be made by mid-February.

Presenter Registration

All technical session presenters must register for the conference at full conference fees. Presenters attending the conference only for the day of the presentation must register at the prevailing one-day rate.

Changes, Cancellations, Withdrawals

  • An abstract that has been submitted for presentation will be considered final; it cannot be amended later. The Technical Program Committee regards a submitted abstract as a commitment to present.
  • Under no circumstances should an accepted abstract be withdrawn.
  • If extenuating circumstances prevent the presenting author from making the presentation, it is the presenting author's obligation to find an alternate presenter and notify the Committee.
